High Tech Goes Down There: We-Vibe 4 Plus Review

As smartphones grew bigger and smarter, I scoffed at how those ginormous screens would make my butt look big. Now I barely think twice before shoving it into my back pocket. Rectangular butt cheek be damned–I need my phone. Size matters, right?

Mobile devices aren’t the only gadgets growing smarter. As a connoisseur of adult toys for the past 15+ years, I’ve seen pleasure devices go from using size D batteries to micro-USB chargers. D-sized batteries in your vibrator is akin to putting a 1980s boombox on your shoulder. Cool but awkward.

Technology is making sex toys almost as indispensable as my Galaxy S6. Toys like ben-wa balls will never go out of style, but the new devices are worth their weight in gold. The We-Vibe 4 Plus has a wireless remote, bluetooth capabilities, and programmable settings. It even has an app. Yes, an app. With this vibrator, it’s not about the size of the wave but the motion of the ocean.

A while back, a brand rep asked if she could send me a We-Vibe 4 Plus. A sample of a sex toy you can wear during intercourse? Sign-me up! For the sake of research and development, I accepted the sample. It’s a tough job, but I volunteered as tribute.

Before we dive deep into the review, let’s talk about the specs:

• Less than 3” long and 1.2’ wide, it easily fits in the palm of my hand

You put what where? (Logistics)

At first glance, the We-Vibe 4 Plus doesn’t not look like a typical vibrator. First of all, it’s not shaped like Lenny Kravitz’ wardrobe malfunction. That’s because a large population of women need clitoral stimulation in order to orgasm. Sorry guys.

The U-shaped vibe is silky soft and very flexible.

Its’ two ends each hold a powerful motor to simultaneously stimulate a woman’s clitoris and her G-spot. (I’ll pause while you read the last sentence again). Each motor can be controlled separately to create a customized mode.

The hands-free design gently cups the top vaginal wall. To insert, grab water-based lube and place the flatter, slightly larger end into the vagina. The rounder side should be positioned so it will sit on thousands of nerve endings–the clitoris. Each woman is shaped differently, so it may take a few tries to find a comfortable fit.

Once inserted, the vibe can be controlled via the 2” wireless remote (which comes with button batteries) or via the We-Connect app. Tap those buttons and go to your happy place.

But wait, you said it can be worn during sex?

Yes, I did. Wearing the toy during intercourse essentially turns your man into a moving vibrator. He’ll add a little pressure to your g-spot and your clit will be buzzing happily.

With a bit of maneuvering and lube, your partner can easily join the fun with his magic wand. If you’re worried that your girly bits will feel like an episode of hoarders, never fear. Vaginas are designed to stretch and birth babies. If your man is bigger than that, you’ve got other worries.

The We-Vibe 4 Plus may slip out during more vigorous activity, so I’d recommend woman on top (frontwards or backwards), missionary (won’t be boring anymore!), or spooning. Nothing ruins the mood like a sex toy falling out just before you hit your peak. Think slow and steady until you find a rhythm.

The ultimate multi-tasker

Sure, the We-Vibe 4 Plus is designed to be worn during sex or solo play. Because it is small and quiet on low settings, think outside the box. Wear it during dinner in a noisy restaurant or out to a club. Then hand your partner the remote. Or download the app (more on that soon). Or just slip it in while you’re folding laundry or doing dishes. Housework will no longer be boring. Sitting in line school pick up line may never be the same.

The toy is also waterproof. Take it into the bathtub, shower, or the pool–if you dare.

There’s an app for that

What I was most excited to test was the free We-Connect app (available in the iOs App Store and Google Play).  Once paired with the We Vibe 4 Plus via bluetooth, the app allows users to control the clitorial and g-spot motors. The intensity and mode can be different for each motor.

You create your favorite combo and save it for future use. Users can create a lock code so your kids don’t accidentally turn on your vibrator when all they want is to watch Minecraft videos on YouTube.

The app allows you to grant your partner permission to control your vibrator from his (or her) device. This means you can pass the control to them no matter where your partner is. In the next room, at work, even on the other side of the world.

This all sounds fantastic in theory, but how does it work in reality? In order to save any settings, you’ll need to create an account. “Vibrate as a guest” isn’t as fun when you have to reset the mode each time. Once paired, it was easy to change vibration modes. There is a few seconds of lag from the app to the We-Vibe. Noticeable but not annoying.

I sent my husband to the front of our apartment to test the “across the world” control capability. After downloading the We-Connect app onto his phone, he sent a text request to my app. Only after he’s approved can I give him permission to take over controls. (You do this each time you want to pass the control to someone else). Sure enough, he changed the vibe’s settings from wake-me-up-when-you’re-done to holy-crap-come-back-to-the-bedroom.

Ceding control to another device gets a little buggy. The vibe didn’t always respond to my husband’s tapping. It crashed on both of our phones at least twice.  At one point, the connection was lost and the vibe wouldn’t turn off via remote. While that’s not always a bad thing, I prefer my sex toys to do what I want it to do. (There’s hidden button on the We Vibe for manual control.)

Pros and Cons

Here’s the lowdown on the We-Vibe 4 Plus.

Pros:

• dual motors to cover all major pleasure zones
• rechargeable battery
• waterproof and easy to clean
• discreet (meaning easy to hide from your nosy kids or roommate)
• can be used solo or with a partner
• good for foreplay and intercourse
• app adds another level of play/control

Cons:

• only charges while in the case
• can be noisy (but muffled) on high speeds
• takes a few try to position properly
• app can freeze or crash

The Verdict

4 out of 5 stars: Like any high-tech gadget that promises to make your life better, the We-Vibe 4 Plus has a slight learning curve. While the app may occasionally freeze or crash, that can hopefully be fixed with updates. The vibrator itself is a solid device with enough modes to make most women happy.

Retailing for $179, this couples vibrator is available in three colors: pink, purple or slate. It’s available directly from the manufacturer, online stores, and even a store near you. While the price sounds steep, it’s totally worth the investment for a high quality toy that will last you for years to come.

Besides, if you break down the cost per orgasm, you’re getting the better end of the stick. BADUMTSS!
